How to Find Peace, Recovery, and Transformation After Burnout

Have you found that lately, the motivation you once had to pursue things you’re passionate about has been next to none? Does your busy lifestyle often leave you feeling like there has to be more to life than just endless work?

Like many others, you may be experiencing Burnout Syndrome — a form of severe mental exhaustion that can occur when life’s challenges and responsibilities become too overwhelming to handle. According to Forbes, millennials are the most affected population of the condition, with nearly 60% experiencing symptoms of burnout.

But before you start to fret even more, know that you are okay. Feeling this way is completely normal, and there is a way out of this.

There often comes a time in everyone’s life when finding time to sit down and listen to your own thoughts seems nearly impossible. And when we do finally have an opportunity to relax, feelings of guilt might arise, stemming from the idea that it is wrong to stop being productive.

It is during these times that we need a way to release any unwanted feelings and replace them with positive forms of self-reassurance. Pressing reset and beginning your journey to burnout recovery is essential to achieving your career, financial and social goals in a way that prioritizes YOU first.

With our helpful guide to navigating transformation after burnout, you can learn how to find balance in an active lifestyle while maintaining health and sanity.

Releasing Exhaustion and Welcoming Relaxation

As we navigate a Western society that often pairs rest with laziness, allowing yourself to relax amidst the chaos can be almost frightening. Where do you begin? How do you shut your mind off when it whirls at a speed of eighty miles a minute?

There are ways to release these fears, welcome in the light of relaxation, and plan for bigger, better things. These methods include:

  • Setting aside time to do nothing. Sometimes, the best thing to do for yourself is to allow yourself to rest and bask in the seemingly complex art of absolutely nothing. This could mean sitting in solitude and silence for ten minutes to let your mind wander. Thoughts will come and go, offering you a valuable opportunity to observe yourself, the way you think, and how your thoughts play a role in the way you handle stress and burnout.
  • Practicing mindfulness. As you sit in silence, your mind may start replaying the stressful events of the day, and your first instinct will be to resist. Don’t try to push away the thoughts that will inevitably come – this is an opportunity to be mindful. Let in a stressful thought, observe it, and feel it melt away without judgement or a need to change it. In time, you will learn to dissolve worries as they come and understand the power of intention.
  • Walking for 15 minutes each day. Getting in any sort of exercise throughout the day is beneficial to the body and spirit. Especially when you’re feeling burnt out and having trouble finding motivation, walking for 15 minutes a day and adding five minutes each week can be just the thing that brings you back on track.
  • Making a green smoothie or power drink every morning. When you’re feeling like you’re at your lowest, sometimes just the thing you need is a sip of something to give you energy. Start your day off with a green smoothie or a nutritional shake to fuel your body with vitamins and minerals that will make your body feel better, and in turn, you feel better.

Replacing thoughts of laziness with positive ones that value resting more than working yourself to the point of burnout can impact the way you function and handle times of stress. What we need to do, therefore, is release those thoughts and welcome in a healthy challenge that is going to bring us more peace and fulfillment.

Bringing the Right Amount of Challenge into Your Life

“Every challenge you face today makes you stronger tomorrow. The challenge of life is intended to make you better, not bitter.”

Roy T. Bennett

Let’s reflect on this quote for a moment. When was the last time you faced a challenge and were accepting of it instead of bitter?

When life hands you lemons, our first instinct is usually not to make lemonade, but to make a sour face. As we realize the intention of life’s challenges – to make us stronger rather than weaker – we can soon begin to proudly accept those lemons and add a bit of sugar to make them sweeter.

While allowing yourself to relax and destress is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it’s also crucial to give yourself opportunities to be challenged once in a while. A moderate balance of rest and challenge allows your brain and body to feel productive without getting overwhelmed.

Embarking on a 60-day challenge could leave you with lasting physical and mental benefits. The way we face challenges is a reflection not of what we are capable of, but of how we endure and overcome in the midst of adversity. And when we take on our own challenges that stimulate us rather than burn us out, we can finally move past the old thought pattern of viewing life’s challenges as bitter, and enter a healing mindset that equates the right amount of challenge with strength and wisdom.

If you have been burnt out lately, the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself is in a controlled and attentive way. When you are the one challenging yourself for the better with a healthy diet, exercise, and mindfulness strategies, your body will slowly start to realize that the challenges being faced are not burning you out, but making you stronger and healthier than before.
