5 Ways to Reduce Stress

By Ashley Fernandes, a Life’s Rails Blog Contributor

Stress is one of the leading causes of several mental health problems and medical issues. The amount of stress our minds and bodies go through can impact our daily lives and even hinder the way we interact with others. Now is a time where the whole world is undergoing stress, fear and anxiety over unprecedented events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fortunately, there are many ways that we can help reduce stress that can help us lead a healthier and more energetic life. Continue reading to learn the five ways to reduce your stress in your daily life.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is an incredibly important part of leading a stress-reduced life than most people realize. Working a 9 to 5 job or studying full-time often leaves many people struggling to find enough time to get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep. The less sleep you get, the less rested your body feels, and cortisol levels are much harder to maintain when your body isn’t feeling its best. To allow your body the rest it deserves and lower stress levels, prioritize getting enough sleep by going to bed earlier or taking naps throughout the day to help your body rest in intervals.

Talk to Somebody You Trust

Talking to someone you trust to spill all your worries and fears can reduce stress levels dramatically. If you do not currently have someone in your life that you can talk to, consider seeking out a therapist.

Free online therapy services are a great option for those who do not have the luxury of traditional, in-person therapy.

Consider Natural Supplements

Since stress is a common issue in our society, many supplements have been made available to help reduce stress levels. While doctor-prescribed drugs may help, natural supplements may also be beneficial and even preferred to some people. If you are looking to take the natural route, consider supplements that contain natural plant-based substances like Ashwagandha Root, St. John’s Wort, Valerian Root, Lemon Balm, and more.

Before taking any natural supplements, please consult with your doctor to ensure that the supplement does not interfere with any existing health conditions or prescribed medications.

Exercise Regularly

Several studies show that exercise has a dramatic effect on stress levels. Working out releases endorphins that leave us feeling calmer, happier and overall satisfied. For those who work behind a desk, moving around once in a while can really benefit your health. Exercising for at least 40 minutes a day will make you feel less stressed in no time.

Drink Something Warm

Drinking a cup of hot cocoa can warm even the coldest of hearts — and calm even the jitteriest of nerves. Make sure to stay away from caffeinated drinks as they could end up making you more jittery and stressed. Sticking with teas, milk, or a cup of hot soup will help bring your stress levels down.

Stress is inevitable, but when it’s affecting the way we live, it’s important to take action. If you are struggling with stress, consider calling a Stress and Anxiety hotline to help find solutions.
