Why Planning Is Important In Intentional Living
Intentional Living is purposeful.
In a time when we are encouraged to “hustle,” stay busy, be masters of our work-life and home life, practice self-care and somehow stay healthy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, confused, and burnt out. No matter what industry you’re in.
Introducing systems into your life that help you prioritize, balance, set goals, and destress can be life-changing. You can spend all day wishing things were different, but if you don’t act, even imperfectly, your hopes and dreams will simply be left as wishes. Although it may seem daunting to change the comfortable aspects of your day-to-day life, the result will bring you closer to achieving the quality-of-life upgrade you are searching for.
“It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.” – Eleanor Roosevelt.
If you think planning is difficult, you’re not alone. Planning does not come naturally to everyone, and finding the plan that works for you takes practice, patience, and trial-and-error. But planning has proven beneficial in so many ways, and the good news is that it DOESN’T have to be complicated. A planner is something that you can make totally yours. If you want to include cursive font and stickers, you can! If you wish to make a simple list, that’s fine! You can plot out every second of your day or leave things a little more flexible. Use the planner in the way that best serves you.
Here are a few ways that incorporating a planner into your life can help you conquer overwhelm, amplify your well-being, and strengthen you in your journey towards intentional living.
Planning Boosts Your Time Management Skills
Scheduling your time effectively sets you up for success. If you know a task takes you an hour, but you find yourself with 45 minutes to complete it, you’ll feel frazzled and rushed and maybe not put your all into certain tasks. Using a planner lets you schedule ample time to do work tasks and errands. Additionally, you can block time for self-care practices, like taking a bubble bath or watching an episode of your favorite show. This will leave you feeling in control of your schedule and not rushed to get it all done.
Helps You Complete Tasks Faster
Believe it or not, taking time to plan helps you get things done faster! How? Planning helps you stay focused on the task at hand and not get distracted by other things you need to do. By planning, you allot time for everything so you can give each project your undivided attention.
Allows You To Prioritize
A great way to start planning is by making a list of all the things you need to do in a day or week. Then look at those tasks and start prioritizing. Is anything time-sensitive for the day? Which tasks can be done immediately? Can you do anything later in the day or tomorrow? Are there any meetings for the day? When you prioritize tasks, you don’t have important things hanging over your head, and you can focus on each task in the order of importance.
Opens Up the Ability to Conquering Your Goals
By planning, you are also committing. Using a planner helps you set up steps to reach big goals. For example, if you have a big project, you create small action steps in your planner to work to completion.
For example,
Monday- Outline your project.
Tuesday- Work on aspect A for 2 hours.
Wednesday- Follow up with your team, etc.
You can also use sections to write out objectives for the week and montl; setting micro-goals that lead up to big goals throughout the year.
These can be personal goals too. Maybe you dream of walking a mile by the end of the month. You can set a time to walk five minutes daily until you can walk ten, then fifteen, etc. You can even write down habits you wish to incorporate, like drinking more water, taking meditation breaks, or eating more veggies throughout the day.
A Therapeutic Experience
Planners aren’t just empty calendar blocks anymore! Get creative! If you use a paper planner, buy some colorful pens and fun stickers. Trying an eversion? Use your favorite fonts and find cute, free graphics online! If you need a creative outlet, your planner could be an excellent way to help you destress.
“There are dreamers, and there are planners; the planners make their dreams come true.”
-Edwin Louis Cole.
